Did you watch 4 Corners last evening?

A chilling doco about the current status of women in Afghanistan.
Despite the fall of the Taliban many women still live in dreadful
repressive circumstances. One of the most disturbing things is the
number of young women who try to commit suicide by burning
themselves to death. This is often unsuccessful & they are left with
horrible scarring & living in pain thereafter. It is confronting indeed
and left me with a sense of powerlessness in terms of what can be
done. My small gesture is to be a member of Amnesty International.

I sincerely wish I had seen this. I think we all need a reminder from time to time of how lucky we are as women to be in a country that doesn't stamp all over our civil liberties.

In the wake of all the political paranoia about terrorism, it is also important to give ordinary Muslims a human face. I recently saw an excellent film called Chasing Freedom, which is based on the true story of an Afghani teacher who flees to the US just before 9/11 and gets caught in the asylum system. Really gripping.

I'm glad you're enjoying the interactivity of the post-then-comment process. On a blog like Lifehacker, which gives tips on how to make technology (and your life) work for you, some of the most interesting discussions actually happen in the comments section!

According to this page from the list of resources at the bottom of the Swinburne 23 Things task no. 4 post, the sign of a good blogger is a writer who engages with and responds to comments. Here's an example of how this is done successfully on Lifehacker.

hi bec - keep an eye on the new Informit news database, which has 4 Corners but there appears to be a few weeks' time-lag (latest there today is 10 Sep)

Yes, I saw the 4 Corners program too. Every news item I see or hear on Afghanistan seems to paint a similarly horrifying picture. On Radio National recently I heard the story of a warlord who asked a man if he could marry his daughter. Neither the father or daughter were enthusiastic about the proposal. The warlord's response to rejection was to murder the young woman. The father is too afraid to take the issue up with local authorities. So, it doesn't seem like there's anyplace in the country where women can live in safety.
